Natural Gamma Sub
Our company would like to introduce the NATURAL GAMMA SUB, which can be used as an alternative to the present RADIOACTIVE TAG marker, presently being used in spotting tubing conveyed perforating guns, packers, plugs, etc………
Although radioactive tag markers are not new, this concept is. The N/G SUB UTILIZES A NON-CONTROLLED NATURAL GAMMA-RAY SUBSTANCE. The N/G SUB, when used in conjunction with a gamma-ray scintillation tool, will provide approximately 200 to 600 gamma-ray counts per second as compared to 3600 to 5000 counts per second with the R/A material presently being used. With normal downhole formations emitting anywhere from 10 to 90 gamma-ray counts per second, the N/G SUB will provide more than enough counts for locating exact depth in the well bore.
This sub would eliminate the following:
• THE USE OF A CONTROLLED RADIOACTIVE SUBSTANCE ON LOCATION.
• EXPENSE OF ON SITE PERSONNEL IN HANDLING R/A SOURCES.
• PROPER RADIOACTIVE SHIPPING PAPERS, ETC….
• RADIOACTIVE LICENSE --- SERVICE COMPANIES.
• GEIGER COUNTERS USED TO LOCATED RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS.
• EXPENSIVE DOT / HAZ-MAT TRANSPORTATION
Under our application, DOT / HAZ-MAT paper work would be kept to a minimum, just your standard paper work will need to be shipped to a cross-over sub location. If the N/G SUB was lost downhole or overboard, the worst that could happen would be the cost of the sub. This sub can legally be flown to the location without HAZ-MAT paper work or label. When a radioactive sub is used, and the sub or R/A material is lost, there is endless paper work and possible fines involved.
Another application would be for permanent downhole marker left in the pipe string. There are situations where a Neutron log must be run instead of a standard Gamma-Ray log to provide proper depth correlation. After the first Gamma-Ray / Neutron base log is run, with a Natural Gamma Sub in the tubing, only a Gamma-Ray would be required for depth correlation on subsequent runs in the well. This would relieve the oil company from concern of losing a Neutron source in the well and not being able to recover it.
We hope that the above information will meet your requirements in applications discussed. If additional information is required, please contact us at the above number(s).
